Antioxidants - Nature’s fountain of youth
Posted on October 4, 2007
It is incredible how much we are hearing everyday about antioxidants and their importance to our health.First let’s define a few terms to better understand the subject and how it affects our health.
Molecule
- A stable and electrically neutral group of at least two atoms. A simple example is H20 (water).
Antioxidant
- A molecule that slows or prevents the oxidation of other molecules.
Oxidation
- The loss of electron(s) by a molecule. Basically you can think of oxidation like rust. Oxidation is what our bodies go through constantly and is what causes all of us to age.
Free Radical
- Molecules with an unpaired electron. Free radicals are created in our bodies by our diet, the environment we live in, chemicals, excess sun, and by most of our every day activities.
Now that we all know the basic terms we can now discuss the importance of consuming antioxidants. Antioxidants come from many different sources, but are primarily found in fruits and vegetables. Eating foods high in antioxidants help our bodies neutralize free-radicals and fight disease. There is a lot of information out about the effects of antioxidants on fighting cancer and slowing the aging process. The most important thing to keep in mind is the more antioxidants and wider variety or antioxidants you consume the more benefit your body will get. By consuming antioxidants from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables our bodies get all the different types of nutrients that help fight disease. Variety in our diets is not only healthy, but is more enjoyable. Who wants to eat hot dogs, hamburgers, corn, bread, or any food all the time. Check out the articles below on the amazing benefits of an antioxidant rich diet.
How can we easily get all the healthy antioxidants?
In my eyes there are basically three different ways that everyone can get the needed antioxidants to slow down the natural oxidation process in our bodies.
- Eat the correct amount and types of foods to naturally ingest antioxidants.
- Purchase man made supplements, which are normally less effective when separated from the food source. Even supplements that pull out the antioxidant minerals and vitamins form natural food sources are not as effective. Many of these type sources can be found in tablets or capsules sold at health food stores.
- Find a supplement that does not separate the antioxidants and nutrients from the source. Find a supplement that will contain enough antioxidants to impact your health and that will be simple to consume and use.
My choice has been number 3. My wife an I have found a convenient and delicious way to get the antioxidants we need to improve our health without having to constantly think about which foods contain the best antioxidants. Do not get me wrong we eat very health compared to most of the population, but we do not fill our pantry and refrigerator full of fruits and vegetables that spoil or are processed depleting their nutritional value. We have choose a natural blend of 19 fruits put into a delicious juice format. The blend gives you the daily recommended servings of fruit in only 2 to 4 ounces a day. The blend’s crown jewel is the Acai berry found in the Amazon Rain forest. The Acai berry has had world wide acclaim from Oprah and made the best sellers list in Dr. Perricone’s book. The blend combines a variety of fruits from around the world in every shade from yellow to dark purple. The blend gives you everything you need to consume the antioxidants that you need.

This really great info. Basically, supplement with anti-oxidants to slow the aging (rusting) process. A great article with great science. I’ve been doing some reading on acai berry - man that looks promising.
